I have recently moved my blog from WordPress to a static site and in the process of doing that I wanted to ensure all the images were updated and also add a cover image to each post to make the post look more approachable than just a blob of text.

For this purpose I did not want to end up buying a stock image or just using a random images which came up in a web search. Hence I started looking at free resources which could be used for the blog. This is when I stumbled upto the two website mentioned below, one has a huge collections of user contributed photos where as the other is filled with hundreds of illustrations.

Unsplash (website)

Unsplash has a huge collection of high resolution photos on most of the areas of interest. I decided on this site as I could find photos to use as cover image for my existing blog posts and the collection is not restricted to one or two photos, it has lots of photos for each search criteria which is good as it gives options when choosing a right fit. I ended up using the photos from the site on my main blog https://kamaths.org as it added the right character for each blog post. All the photos from Unsplash are free to download and can be used for personal or commercial purposes with or without attribution.

Undraw (website)

For this blog which is more of small blog post on something which I find interesting in the world of technology, I did not want to use photos as it would be a bit difficult to find photos for each topic and it also increases the page load times. So this is when I found Undraw. It has hundreds on illustrations with the option to customize the accent colour of the image prior to download. You can download as SVG or PNG. For this blog, I am choosing SVG as it is very light in terms of file size so can be downloaded faster and keeps the page light. As with Unsplash, all illustrations available in Undraw can be downloaded for free and can be used for commercial purpose with or without attribution.
